Okonomiyaki restaurant

There is a particular Okonomiyaki restaurant near the office. Okonomiyaki is known as the Japanese-style pancake and pizza, combined. Literally translated, it means "grill as you like"; basically you can add any of your favourite ingredients in to make your own dish.

A typical okonomiyaki could include chopped cabbage, thinly sliced pork, red ginger, yakisoba noodles, tenkasu (tempura crumbs), corn, green onions, squid, shrimp, dried bonito flakes, and bean sprouts. Toppings include some type of sweet sauce and mayonnaise.

There are some restaurants which allow their customers to make their own okonomiyaki, so for those who are into DIY, you could have a try here. Or if you'd rather prefer, they can also cook it for you, ready to eat.

Cooking okonomiyaki can be quite difficult for a beginner, but it's an enjoyable learning experience nevertheless. Here are some simple steps to guide you :

1. Mix all the ingredients together
2. Pour the batter mixture onto the heated-up grill

3. When it looks slightly cooked, quickly turn it over

4. Using the flat ladle, push it down to flatten it
5. When it's fully cooked, brush the top of the okonomiyaki with some sauce

In Japan, the okonomiyaki dish is most popular in 2 areas : Osaka and Hiroshima.

Similar to the okonomiyaki, another variation is called the monjya. It is roughly made up of the same type of ingredients, but is more liquid and is cooked differently.

This is a dish where you can have a chat while waiting for it to be cooked.

Looks delicious, no?
